Under this menu header we provide a variety of resources which relate collecting data from the systems you have created for your research. Each of the following links will lead to a database which assembles information for that specific theme within this research phase. The explanation given for each theme is meant to guide your research but also help you locate the appropriate database for your contributing records. In addition, for each theme we have a comment area where you can leave a note pertaining to a particular resource recorded in the database.
For instructions on how to enter a record into one of the databases listed below please see this page.
Qualitative – methods for assessing subjective experience e.g. learner engagement, attitudes, recording and analysis of discourse, dialogue.
Quantitative – measures that produce data at a level of measurement sufficient to permit the sensible use of arithmetic or statistical analytical methods.
Mixed method – rich and productive combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Triangulation – related to mixed methods - can be method and/or data triangulation where findings from use of qualitative and quantitative methods cross-inform and complement each other.
Linguistic – role of language in teaching and learning e.g. studying how the 'register' of language is acquired by learners to talk about maths or physics, also capturing discourse and dialogue from groups of learners. Could also include use of language games to stimulate learning discussions and overcome shyness.
Visual – capturing video, screen images - graphical forms of data.
Survey & questionnaire – design of survey instruments, survey data collection e.g. using online survey administration systems.
Protocol – collection and analysis of rich learning protocols from individual learners eg in microgenetic study contexts, also verbal protocols, writing and sketching protocol capture.
Collaborative – data collection from groups of collaborating learners using TEL systems.
Psychometrics – using psychometric instruments e.g. for measuring learning/cognitive styles, learning outcomes, abilities, personality, attitudes…
